Jubilee Congregation

Jubilee Debt

In June 2007 Holy Trinity made a commitment to the Jubilee Debt Campaign (formerly Jubilee 2000) to become a Jubilee Congregation, pledging to become more active in the fight to save lives and restore hope for the millions of people affected by the debt crisis in the developing world.

Jubilee Congregations agree to:

¶ Affirm the aims of the Jubilee Debt Campaign in their work to free poor people and countries from the burden of unjust and unpayable debt.

¶ Pray for justice for the world's poorest communities.

¶ Make an annual donation for the work of JDC.

¶ Take at least one action a year on debt as a congregation.

Britain’s Dodgy Deals

On Thursday 10 February, I was invited to attend a reception in Parliament, organised by JDC, in support of action to reform the Export Credits Guarantee Department.  The event was hosted by Helen Goodman MP who was joined by other eminent speakers including MPs and representatives from various NGOs.  To have MPs and NGOs working together seems to me to be an effective way forward.

The ECGD, which insures chosen exporters when selling goods or services overseas, is in urgent need of reform as it lacks screening and transparency.  It backs mainly large corporations involved in arms, aerospace or fossil fuels industries.  Over the years, many of these projects have involved human rights abuses, environmental destruction or corruption.  What is worse, these projects can leave a trail of debt, which means developing countries are still paying for projects which were useless or even detrimental to their interests.
